Publishing
Your Pages

Choosing a Web Server

The purpose of all this is to get your site up where other people on the internet can see it, right? Well that can actually be pretty simple, and free as well. You need to find someone to host your web pages. This means that you will upload all of the graphics, html pages, wav files and whatever else your site may contain to the host and they will store it for you and make it available to other viewers.

There are many free Web Hosts out there here are a few of them to try. However they will not let you use these sites for buisness services.

Yahoo's geocities - www.geocities.com
Acmecity - www.acmecity.com
or contact Angel Enterprise at webmaster@angelenterprise.com to find out more.

The process for publishing on these sites is fairly straight forward. They have there own File Managers that alow you to upload your files straight to them. And they even have homebuilders that will help you build your site and practically do it all for you. This is a great way to get started albeit very limited. If you want to go a step further you can use an FTP which is generally much more reliable. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is a method of transfering documents to the server. You can get FTP programs on the web, some for free. Some pretty good ones are CoffeeCup FTP, BulletProof, CuteFTP and WS_FTP.

Make sure that the server or web host you choose supports FTP. If they do they will let you know what information you need for transferring your files (generally a URL, username, and password).

Here are a couple of pointers for geting your pages up on the web:

  • Make sure that you upload all of your images to the host and have the correct IMG SRC tag. If the IMG SRC tag is calling the image from your harddrive and you publish the pages, no one will be able to see them.
  • If you use a free web host be prepared to have your pages plastered with advdertisements and pop up windows. This is how they pay for the free hosting.
  • Always make sure you check all of your links to make sure they are working properly.
  • The top level document is usually named index.htmorindex.html. Lets say that you decide to sign up for geocites and you choose the name coolpages for your username. Your address would become : www.geocities.com/coolpages/. The page that comes up when you type in this URL is the top level document and is usually named index. The host usually has index posted for you, allowing you to edit it. If you would like to replace it with your own find what they have named it, name the document you would like to have replace it by the same name and then just upload it to the host.

That's it! Just sign up and load your pages. Then all you have to do is get the word out that it's there. E-Mail everyone to let them know your pages are up. A lot of Web Hosts will have a search engine registration service to get your site on the most popular search engines. Have fun and Happy Web Developement!
